BluBird

Small apps. Built properly. Kept working.

We’re BluBird — three people in Calgary who build consumer apps and keep them working. No investors, no exit plan, no growth targets we didn’t set ourselves.

Crabby

Crabby keeps it fresh. A friendly pinch before it spoils.

Know what’s in your fridge, what’s about to go off, and what you can make with it tonight. It exists because three people who love food kept throwing it in the bin. iOS, Android and web.

One at a time. We finish an app before we start the next one, which is slower than it sounds and the reason we ship anything at all.

How we work

What we build

  • Consumer apps
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Web
  • Cross-platform, one codebase

How we decide

  • All three excited, or we don't build it
  • One project at a time
  • Ship it or kill it
  • No graveyard of half-started ideas

How we build

  • Expo
  • Vercel
  • Turso
  • Clerk
  • Real store compliance
  • Privacy by default
  • Accessibility not bolted on

What we don't do

  • Client work
  • Outside funding
  • Ads
  • Data sales
  • Growth targets

Three things we won’t do

Every small app you rely on eventually gets worse. Ads arrive. The useful part moves behind a paywall. Your data becomes the product. It happens for a reason — somebody needed a bigger number. We don’t have anybody to answer to, which is what lets us say this and mean it.

01

We will never sell your personal information.

Not aggregated into a data broker's product. Not quietly. Not ever.

02

The free version stays genuinely useful.

Not a trial. Not a crippled demo built to annoy you into paying. If you never give us a cent, it should still earn its place on your phone.

03

No ads. Ever.

Nothing on your screen that someone else paid to put there.

Three people

No client logos to show you yet. Here’s who’s actually doing the work.

Jane Zhang

Business

Travels religiously. Has already worked out the airport, the transit card and the good coffee before the rest of us have packed.

Richard Walsh

Technology

Star Wars and comic books. Will happily rebuild the thing twice to get it right, which is either the best or worst quality here.

Queenie Wei

Finance

Keeps us honest and keeps the receipts. Homesick for China in the way that makes her cook better than the rest of us.

Questions? We’ll answer them honestly.

How many people work at BluBird?

Three. Jane, Rich and Queenie. That's the whole company, and it's not a stepping stone to a bigger one.

Do you have investors?

No, and we're not looking for any. Everything is funded by the three of us. It's the reason we can promise no ads and no data sales and actually keep it.

Is this a side project?

We all have day jobs. BluBird is incorporated, files its returns, signs real agreements and ships to real app stores. Small isn't the same as casual.

Will you still be here in three years?

That's the right question to ask anyone you're about to trust with your groceries. We can't prove a future, but we can tell you the structure: no runway to run out of, no investor timeline, no acquisition to be absorbed into. The usual reasons small apps disappear don't apply to us.

How do you make money?

Not yet, is the honest answer. Crabby's beta is free. When we do charge it will be for the app itself — never for you, or your data.

What happens if one of you leaves?

The company owns the apps, not any one of us. It's written down properly. That was the first thing we sorted out.

Where are you?

Calgary, Alberta. Canadian-owned and incorporated in Canada.

Can I work with you?

We don't take client work. Longer term we want to help junior developers ship their own first app using our launch process, with a revenue share. If that sounds like you, say hello and we'll remember you when it's real.

We’ll tell you when we ship something.

One email when a new app launches, and nothing in between. Nothing else, ever — which you’d hope, given the rest of this page.

Or just say hello — hello@buildwithblubird.com
